But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really funny. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a groan.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You question about the nature of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck without warning, destroying entire cities in its wake. Buildings shattered like fragile toys, and the chaos that ensued was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath debris, their fate precarious. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, rendering survivors to grapple a future forever altered.

Worst Day Ever
It all started with the case of morning hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was dashing out the door, I fell and with a thud all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely behind schedule for a very important appointment.
I sweating. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was a hopeless situation.
The rest of the day was even website worse. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as a day to forget.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
